The work begins with trust- learned in spaces where being visible is already a risk, and the camera has to prove it won't be used against anyone.
Tian photographs people in moments they rarely show: vulnerable, absorbed, intimate. Not unaware of being seen- allowed to be seen. This has worked in search-and-rescue aircraft over the Mediterranean, at protest frontlines, and in the private quiet of couples in their kitchens and beds. The method is the same everywhere.
It starts with his own vulnerability. He doesn't ask people to open up, he opens up first. Before the other person risks anything, Tian is already unprotected: present, close, unhidden behind the camera or a role. That's the exchange. And it's what makes the camera disappear. What remains are images that are warm, precise, and true. They don't document a scene. They show what happens when someone is fully safe.
